Kamal was born and brought up in Dudila, a small village near Chaukori. As a recipient of a scholarship from the Himalayan Education Foundation, he completed his intermediate education from Himalayan Inter College. He is interested in a career in the army and preparing for tests to enter the Indian defence forces. He currently works in the hospitality industry and lives in Delhi. Below is a small chat with Kamal.

Hi Kamal! Let’s start with your family background. Where are you from and what do your parents do? 

I am from Dudila, near Kotmanya, 5 km from Chaukori. My parents are farmers and live in our village.

What about your education and studies?

I passed Intermediate in 2019. And enrolled in a coaching course for the Airforce and Navy entrance test.

What’s your present activity and where do you live now? 

I am in Delhi preparing for the defence services entrance examination. Also I work for the hospitality industry part time.

What career would you pursue ideally? Why? 

I would like to join the Indian Army because I believe in serving the nation with pride and dignity. Soldiers are respected a lot in our society.

What else would you like to do in life? Your dreams…

I would like to travel places and make new friends.

Tell me what you like about living in the city? 

I value the access to a good hospital as well as access to excellent education facilities. 

What do you like to do in your spare time?

I like to listen to motivational speeches.

What is your favourite book? Or a movie? 

Shershah- It’s a great movie about a soldier who sacrificed his life for defending the nation in Kargil war in 1999. It’s a huge inspiration for me.

Do you listen to music? If so, who are your favourite musicians? 

While travelling I  like to listen to music and Dino James is my favourite singer.

Do you travel? Let’s know the places you have been. And what you liked.

 I like travelling. I have been to many holy places and tourist spots in my state.

What are the challenges faced by the hill communities?

Lack of healthcare and education facilities and job opportunities.

What is needed in your village that would better the lives of people staying there? 

We need to improve the quality of primary school education as  it would significantly improve the future opportunities for village children.

What is your favourite memory of HIC? 

Last day of school. Leaving friends is an emotional moment that is etched in my memory.
