Deepin Singh : More than marks – A hill boy’s quest

Deepin Singh is currently studying 12th class at Himalayan Inter College (HIC), Chaukori. His father is a bus driver, who works for HIC. Deepin has four sisters and a brother. Three of his sisters are married and his brother too studies at HIC. He is receiving a scholarship from Himalayan Education Foundation (HEF) for his studies at HIC .

Since his childhood Deepin has been interested in the sciences and has performed well in 10th class. He has chosen to focus on Biology, Physics and Chemistry streams in his intermediate education. He would like to become a medical professional and aims to be a doctor. So he is studying hard for NEET, National Eligibility cum Entrance Test in order to gain admission into MBBS courses in medical colleges in India. He wants to improve the health condition of poor people.

Deepin lives with his parents in Chaukori. He loves the fact that he is living closer to nature in the hills. He has n’t ever lived in a city, however, from what he has heard from others, (that cities as places of pollution and overpopulation), he feels they are not for him.

While not studying, Deepin can be seen playing cricket or reading books. His favorite book is Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. He also likes reading autobiographies from which he gleans valuable life lessons. His other hobbies include gardening and listening to music, especially by Arjit Singh. He likes the ambiance in temples, as it gives him peace of mind. So whenever time permits he visits temples.

Deepin thinks the challenges faced by the hill people include overpopulation. Chaukori is getting more crowded year by year and there is a scarcity of basic amenities like drinking water.

When asked how he wants to contribute to the betterment of his native village, Deepin says he would like to create spaces where people can come together to discuss and exchange ideas with each other, generating the best solutions for developing their community. Having a community centre, library and recreation centre in a village brings people together and fosters productive conversation among them.

As a student of HIC, Deepin finds the campus a place to learn and grow. He values friendship and feels lucky to have found a few friends who help and inspire him. He thinks HIC students are special because they are hardworking and helpful.
