Hard Work Pays Off: HIC Students Shine in Uttarakhand Board Exams

A report by Catherine Arnst

There was a lot of celebrating on April 30th at Himalayan Inter College.  Its just graduated seniors and current 10th graders found out their results on the extremely competitive state-wide Uttarakhand Board Exams. All the students scored  “firsts,” making HIC the top-scoring school in the Pithoragarh district and number 2 overall in Uttarakhand.

The magnitude of this achievement becomes even more apparent when considering the competition. A staggering total of 94,768 12th grade students and 116,379 tenth graders took part in the three-hour exam, held in February and March. Despite this, two of HIC’s seniors secured the 21st highest score in the state, and five of its 10th graders were among the top 25, with one student ranking seventh. This is a testament to the exceptional quality of education at HIC. For the new graduates, their high scores mean they are assured the opportunity to go to college if they choose.

Teachers excitedly watch exam results come in

“Our years of hard work are paying off,” said HIC principal Devbala Bisht. “We are immensely proud of our students and their outstanding performance.” One of those students is Devbala’s own daughter, Laxika Bisht, who ranked 26 in the state on the 12th grade exam.

Through the generosity of its sponsors, the Himalayan Education Foundation (HEF) provides scholarships for 171 students at Himalayan Inter College.  “We are so proud of the students and the faculty.  It’s one thing to have a few star students.  It’s another when all students do so well!” said Monica Lehner, HEF board chair. We wish all the students a great success in their endeavours and a happy life.
