Esha Mehta : Life is a beautiful equation

Esha Mehta is an alumnus of Himalayan Inter College Chaukori (HIC) and a native of Berinag, a small nearby town. Daughter of an ex-Army veteran, she currently stays with her parents in New Delhi where she is pursuing a honours degree in Mathematics. Let’s talk to Esha to know more about her life and dreams for the future.

————-

Hi, Esha. Welcome to Himalayan Vaani. First let’s know about your family background.

My family is from Nachni village, about 50 km from HIC, Chaukori. For my education my parents moved to Berinag. I completed my intermediate studies in 2020. My father served in the army earlier and my mother is a homemaker. I have a little sister and she is preparing for a national level medical college entrance test.

Nice. What about your life after HIC? What did you pursue later?

After intermediate education, I moved to New Delhi to do a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics (honours) from Bharati college which is affiliated to the University of Delhi. At present,  I stay with my parents and sister in Delhi.

Why mathematics? Any particular reason?

Mathematics is fascinating because though  it’s an abstract subject it has many practical applications in daily life. I love applied mathematics.

Besides maths, I love studying history.

What is your student life like in Delhi?

I am a third year student now and studying hard to obtain good grades. And I try to explore places and meet different people in this huge city.

What career would you pursue ideally?

At this point in my life, I am not sure about it. But I guess I would like to pursue any career that engages my interests and as a result I continue to learn and grow.

What higher studies/ skills would you like to acquire?

I want to learn something new and useful. I want to be financially independent because with a paid job, there is a better chance to explore this wonderful world filled with millions of mysteries.

What else would you like to do?

I am interested in dancing and drawing. I think drawing is the best way to express one’s feelings without saying anything in words. Besides this, I love travelling and capturing the beauty of the places in photographs. It refreshes my mind all the time.

What did you like about living in the hill country for school?

The best part about living in the hill country is that you are always surrounded by the beauty of Nature. I experienced a lot of mental peace while I was there . Everything there was just amazing. Nature keeps you inspired and it’s an intense feeling to be in the lap of nature.

Tell me what you like about living in the city?

In a city like Delhi, life becomes very easy. Everywhere, there are opportunities waiting for you. The convenience of city life is another point for favouring it. Basically it’s good for the people who are trying to explore new things. For a person like me it’s the best place I can ever be in my entire life.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

In my leisure, I capture something beautiful and peaceful around me through sketching and  photography. I love discovering new places and music is always a better companion.

What is your favorite book? Or a movie?

It’s really difficult to choose one favourite book. I really like reading books which teach you about “Dharma”. I prefer to have knowledge about Hindu gods. It’s always amazing to read about them. Besides this, “Mahabharata”, and “Bhagwat Gita” have been my all time  favourites.

My favourite movie is “Sita Raman”.

Do you listen to music? If so, who are your favourite musicians?

Yes, I just love listening to music. It’s good therapy.

Do you travel? Let’s know the places you have been. And what you liked.

I love travelling and exploring new places. I’ve been to some places like Dehradun, Mathura, Vrindavan, Karnataka, Agra etc. I love exploring the places on the way to my hometown. Currently I am discovering some beautiful and peaceful places in and around Delhi.

What are the challenges faced by the hill communities?

The most challenging issue faced by  people living in the mountainous terrain is roads and transportation. They have to work hard to fulfil their basic needs. Due to lack of facilities like education, transportation, hospitals, and communications, life is hard in hilly areas and people migrate to cities for better amenities.

What is needed in your village that would better the lives of people staying there?

The government must build better roads for remote villages. Education facilities need to be improved because it can stop migration to cities in search of higher education. Then employment opportunities for the rural youth are to be created by encouraging cottage industries whose products can reach global markets. So building infrastructure is the key.

What are some of your favorite memories of HIC?

My best memories of HIC were in my 12th standard when I faced many tough situations. As the Discipline Head of my school, I learned many things about self management, leadership qualities and the value of friendship. Those were the best moments that transformed my life.

What advice would you give to the current HIC students?

My advice to HIC students is that don’t invest all your time in studying or just completing your syllabus because there are so many things you can explore and discover. Start reading novels, other books, comics and try improving your vocabulary and language skills.

Participate in extracurricular activities, follow your passion and try your best to explore the world. Take part in educational tours conducted by the school. Do what you love. Most importantly, choose your subjects of study wisely in class 11th because they are going to steer your career later. Best wishes for my lovelies. Stay blessed.
