Hello Vivek, please tell us about yourself, your native place, and your family background.
I’m currently a 12th-grade student at Himalaya Inter College (HIC), Chaukori. My native place is Garur in the Bageshwar district. I come from a rural middle-class family; my father teaches at a private school in Kameri Devi, and my mother is a homemaker.
What are your subjects of interest, and what sparked your interest in them?
My main subjects of interest are Mathematics and Physics. I’m fascinated by Physics because I can understand and apply its concepts in my daily life, and Physics, to me, feels incomplete without Mathematics.
What are your plans after completing your Intermediate education?
After Intermediate, my primary goal is to prepare for the NDA examination, as I aspire to join the defense forces.
What other aspirations do you have?
If I’m unable to achieve my dream of joining the defense forces, my backup plan is to prepare for the JEE Main examination to pursue engineering studies.
What did you enjoy about living in the hill country for your schooling?
I truly love the nature and climate of the hilly areas. Even during the summer, we still need blankets at night! I also appreciate the unique customs and rituals of Uttarakhand’s hill areas, and the strong sense of brotherhood among the people here.
What do you like about living in the city?
What I like about city life are the better medical facilities, and the availability of advanced coaching classes and schools also appeals to me.
What are your leisure activities and hobbies? What do you like to do in your spare time?
My hobbies include playing chess, singing, and chanting mantras. In my spare time, I enjoy playing cricket.
Do you have a favorite book or movie?
My favorite book is ‘Wings of Fire’ by the late president of India and scientist Abdul Kalam.
Do you listen to music? If so, who are your favorite musicians?
Yes, I listen to music to regain my energy. My favorite musician is the percussionist, Zakir Hussain.
What challenges do you believe are faced by hill communities?
Hill communities face many challenges, especially the lack of proper medical support. For even minor operations, people often have to travel to Haldwani. There are also significant employment problems and underdeveloped infrastructure, which create numerous difficulties.
What is needed in your village to improve the lives of its residents?
Firstly, we urgently need a hospital in our village.
How would you like to contribute to the betterment of your native village or area?
I would like to contribute to my village by opening a small hospital where even the poor can easily afford and access medical support.
What is your favorite memory from your time at HIC?
My favorite memory at HIC was last year when some foreigners visited our school and selected a few students, including myself, for a free tour to Munsyari. It was full of adventure, trekking, and a lot of fun.
What advice would you give to current HIC students?
My advice to them would be: please do not waste time in class eleventh, because it is the foundation for many competitive exams.
