Nisha Mahara hails from Dharichaura near Berinag, which is about 15 km from Chaukori. Her father is employed in a private firm and her mother is a homemaker. She has a sister and a brother, who are studying in university and secondary school, respectively.
Nisha graduated from Himalayan Inter College( HIC) in 2020. As a student of HIC, she received a scholarship from Himalayan Education Foundation. After her intermediate education, she joined a Bachelor of Arts program with English as her major. English has been her favourite subject since her childhood. She successfully completed the course and obtained her Bachelor’s degree in 2023.
Nisha got married recently and her husband presently works in Kuwait. To become a teacher has been her dream and to teach children is her passion. So Nisha at present works for an NGO (Ambedkar Adarsh Pathasala), which works with government schools in kids’ education. She teaches children who need additional help. She would like to study for a Bachelor’s degree in Education (B.Ed.), so that she can develop and improve her teaching skills
Nisha loves living in the hill country because of the climate and clean air. But cities have more job opportunities, better access to transportation and communication facilities. So developing the rural areas is critical for people’s lives.
Nisha spends her leisure time reading books written by inspirational leaders and shares what she learnt from them with her students. Reading speeches by great achievers inspires her to work hard for a better world. Her favourite books include “3 Idiots” and Believe in Yourself by Joseph Murphy.
Nisha would love to travel to new places and know how people think and live. Among the places she visited, she ranks Taj Mahal in Agra as the most beautiful. When she was at HIC, her class made a tour of Agra, Delhi and Mathura. As for her hobbies, she likes listening to Anuradha Paudwal and Alka Yagnik.
Having been born and brought up in a village, Nisha thinks challenges faced by the hill people include increasing costs of cultivation, exploitation of natural resources, and environmental catastrophes like floods and landslides. She would like to see more job opportunities and good public health facilities in the villages. These mountain communities need the most basic amenities to improve the lives of the villagers.
Nisha believes her work as a teacher in her own village is how she wants to contribute to the betterment of students’ education in the rural areas so that they can learn skills on par with the city kids.
Nisha studied from Kindergarten to Intermediate at HIC, Chaukori, Nisha’s has wonderful memories of the place and the school. Her advice to her juniors at the school is simple,” Study well and focus on your goals.”
