From a farming family to a career in pharmacy : The journey of Satish Chandra

Satish Chandra completed Intermediate in 2023 from Himalayan Inter College, Chaukori. He successfully completed a course in Computer Applications (DCA) and obtained his diploma in 2025. He is currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Pharmacy in Bhimtal. Let’s chat with Satish to learn more about him and his dreams for the future.

Congratulations, Satish for getting admitted into the Pharmacy program. To start with, please tell us about your family background.

Satish: I come from a simple and hardworking family. My father is a farmer. He studied up to the 12th grade and my mother is a housewife. They always support me and encourage me to do my best in life. They live in Patal village tending our farms, some 20 km from Chaukori.

Nice. Let’s talk about your academic journey. What are your subjects of interest?

Satish: Human anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology.

How did you develop these interests? Why are they important to you?

Satish: I became interested in these subjects because they help me understand how the human body works. Watching videos and practical examples made learning easier and more fun. Talking about these topics with others also helped me understand them better. As a future pharmacist, they are essential building blocks for my career.

What career do you hope to pursue?

Satish: I’m interested in becoming a Government Pharmacist, Drug Inspector, or Hospital Pharmacist. I’m also open to research or teaching if the right opportunity comes up.

What higher studies/ skills would you like to acquire?

Satish: I plan to go for a M. Pharma after this degree.  I’m looking forward to gaining practical experience in pharmaceuticals through internships and exploring career options.

Let’s talk about your present life. Where do you live now? What is it like to spend your childhood in the Himalayan hill country?

Satish: I am presently in Bhimtal, in the lake district of Uttarakhand. Living in the countryside has been peaceful and refreshing with beautiful views that make studying enjoyable. The calm environment and close-knit community help me focus and reduce stress.

Tell me what you like about living in a town like Bhimtal?

Satish: Living in a town is great because it offers convenience and plenty of opportunities. There’s always something happening, and I can easily access services and meet new people.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

Satish: In my spare time, I like to exercise and go out for walks. It helps me stay active and clear my mind.

What is your favorite book? or movie?

Satish: I don’t usually read books, but my favorite movie is Ramayan. I love its rich story, culture, and the lessons it teaches.

Do you listen to music? If so, who are your favorite musicians?

Satish: I enjoy listening to music, and my favorite musicians are Shreya Ghoshal, Mohammad Rafi, Kumar Sanu, and Udit Narayan. Their songs always bring back great memories

Do you travel? Tell us about the places you have been. And what you liked.

Satish: I mostly visit temples when I go out. I enjoy the peaceful atmosphere and the spiritual experience they offer.

Let’s turn to societal issues. What are the challenges faced by the hill communities?

Satish: Hill communities face many challenges including such  environmental issues as landslides and soil erosion. Population decline occurs due to migration for better opportunities, and there’s limited access to healthcare and education. Socially, infrastructure like roads and sanitation is lacking. Economically, many rely on agriculture, which is vulnerable to climate change, leading to financial instability.

What is needed in your village that would better the lives of people staying there?

Satish: My village needs better schools, more job opportunities, and support for farmers. This would help improve the overall quality of life for everyone living here.

How would you like to contribute to the betterment of your native village / area?

Satish: I would like to contribute by helping improve education and job opportunities in my village. Supporting farmers with modern techniques and resources would also be important to me.

What is your favorite memory of HIC?

Satsh: My favorite memory of HIC is spending time with my friends and teachers, looking forward to participating in cultural programs, and enjoying sports activities. It made my time there even more fun and memorable.

What advice would you give the current HIC students?

Satish: I would advise current HIC students to focus on their studies but also get involved in extracurricular activities. Build good relationships with your teachers and friends, as they can help you grow. Stay curious, take care of yourself, and enjoy the experience. Don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it.

Thank you, Satish. I wish you all the best in your studies and career.
